"THOUGH RELATIVELY YOUNG COMPARED TO SOME OTHERS IN THE MARKET, HANNA MOORE + CURLEY HAS BUILT UP A STRONG REPUTATION IN THE PATENT FIELD, ESPECIALLY FOR TECHNOLOGY WORK."
Hanna Moore + Curley was formed in 2003, when Barry Moore and Donnacha Curley joined Peter Hanna. Sharing a common vision to build a dynamic, agile and versatile firm which would be attorney led and compete with the best in Europe, the intent was to become the number one firm of European Patent Attorneys in Ireland, within ten years. Bound by commitments to excellence, the synergy of their technical skills, and their broad and deep understanding of the high tech sector, the trio quickly evolved a loyal following of international clients.
Right from the beginning the focus was delivering the best service with solutions aligned to business objectives of our clients. By identifying and using channels for accelerated grant, which were often ignored by other firms, we surprised clients by getting patents granted very quickly.
Hanna Moore + Curley became the first boutique patent firm in Ireland, focussing on high technology, software, and medical devices. Technical specialisation was a key advantage, as was the firm’s readiness to employ the best of tools and technology and a can-do attitude. Hanna Moore + Curley was the first firm in Ireland to adopt the new electronic filing system being introduced at the time by the European Patent Office, EPOline. We helped the EPO to test and improve the system in its infancy, and maintain an active role in suggesting improvements to this day.
By 2006, having been engaged by a major Australian client and expanded our paralegal and administrative team, we moved into new custom-designed premises on Lad Lane, in Dublin 2. Soon, the founding partners were joined by other well experienced attorneys, and we expanded our areas of expertise to include materials sciences, renewable energy, medical and surgical devices, and pharmaceuticals. True to its principles of offering clients the best and most efficient resources available, the firm became paperless, investing in state of the art IT systems and docketing software.
The firm set up a China Representative Office in 2011, another first for an Irish firm, and we are continuing to develop the Asian market and have a significant number of Chinese client companies who are recognised global names.
"Providing clients with a beacon of expertise on the European market… navigating complex cases through the EPO is something of a specialty for the squad"
By 2012, we achieved the original aim of the company to be the number one filer of European Patent Applications based in Ireland. With over 400 applications per annum, Hanna Moore + Curley had proven a worthy competitor to longer-established rivals in London and Munich, winning accolades including the MIP “Top Tier” rating, and IAM 1000 “Highly Recommended” for prosecution attorneys, amongst others.
Gaining clients from Canada to Russia in 2014, and expanding our internal language repertoire to include native Italian, German, French and Chinese speakers, the firm continues to prove its global reach. Close to home, we manage the portfolios of many leading Irish and UK technology companies as well as helping protect the most innovative start-up companies, and providing support to the tech transfer activities in Irish universities.
In 2016, having outgrown our previous location, we again moved. Achieving the objective of combining state of the art technology, breakout spaces and a library, the new offices set the benchmark in Ireland for client meetings and events as well as offering our attorneys the optimal resources, tools and environment for optimal performance.
Having continuously invested in, and drawn the benefits of technology in our daily work, we met the challenges of Covid-19 in 2020 head-on. Transitioning everyone to work from home, we seamlessly maintained operations from over 20 different locations - true testament to our collective tenacity and collaborative instinct to strive for excellence whatever the circumstances.
